In deze bijzondere familiefilm maken Mees Kees en zijn klas kennis met Hardy Hardy, een oudere man die vroeger speelde in een beroemde Hawaiiband: de Honolulu Kings. Tegenwoordig runt hij een kleine toko waar hij omringd wordt door oude platen, cassettebandjes en herinneringen aan het verleden.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"525\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"1095\">Wanneer de klas van Mees Kees een project krijgt over muziek en geschiedenis, komen de leerlingen terecht in de winkel van Hardy. Daar ontdekken ze al snel dat Hardy veel bijzondere verhalen te vertellen heeft over zijn jeugd, zijn muziekcarri\u00e8re en zijn leven in Nederlands-Indi\u00eb. Vooral Synne, de kleindochter van Hardy, speelt een belangrijke rol in het verhaal. Zij voelt zich vaak onzeker en probeert ondertussen uit te zoeken wie ze zelf eigenlijk is. Door de gesprekken met haar opa en de oude cassettebandjes leert ze steeds meer over haar familiegeschiedenis.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1569\">Waar gaat Mees Kees: Honolulu King over?<\/h3>\n<p>De cassettebandjes bevatten indrukwekkende verhalen van mensen die de oorlog en de periode daarna hebben meegemaakt. Voor de klas wordt het project daardoor veel persoonlijker dan ze eerst hadden verwacht. Mees Kees probeert zijn leerlingen te laten zien hoe belangrijk het is om goed naar andere mensen te luisteren en verhalen uit het verleden te bewaren. Tegelijk ontstaan er ook grappige situaties in de klas en in de toko, waardoor de film luchtig en gezellig blijft.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"2022\">Ondertussen krijgt Hardy thuis te maken met moeilijke veranderingen. Zijn vrouw Christina vergeet steeds meer door dementie en herkent hem soms nauwelijks nog. Dat zorgt voor verdrietige maar ook ontroerende momenten. Hardy probeert sterk te blijven door zich vast te houden aan muziek, herinneringen en zijn liefde voor Hawaiicultuur. De vrolijke Hawaiimuziek speelt daarom een grote rol in de film en geeft het verhaal een warme en bijzondere sfeer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2024\" data-end=\"2470\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><em data-start=\"2024\" data-end=\"2039\">Honolulu King<\/em> combineert humor, avontuur en emotie tot een film voor jong en oud.
